The Triangle Every Boat Serves

Where Como’s two arms meet, three villages face each other across a few kilometres of water, and every boat product on the lake ultimately orbits them. Here’s what each actually does, without the brochure tie.

The referee’s card

Bellagio - the promontory, the grand hotels, the cypress staircases between silk shops: the most famous, the most polished, and at peak hours the most elbow-to-elbow. Its job is the postcard. Varenna - across the water, smaller and steeper: the lovers’-lane waterfront walk, Villa Monastero’s gardens, and the train station that makes it the triangle’s practical door. Its job is the charm. Menaggio - the long western lakefront the other two photograph across to: fewer sights, better aperitivo real estate, the local’s pick for actually staying. Its job is the exhale.

Stitching them together

The mid-lake ferries shuttle the triangle constantly in season for a few euros a hop - among Italy’s great cheap rides. The honest one-day pattern: land in Varenna by train, ferry to Bellagio for the morning polish, ferry on to Menaggio for the slow lunch, ferry back.
