One Day, One Lake, No Regrets

The realistic one-day shapes: the mid-lake triangle via Varenna, the Como-end cruise day, and the guided version that bundles it all - with the timing that makes each work.

Updated August 2026

An hour of rail buys one of the world’s great lakes - the trade of the whole Milan trip. What one day cannot buy is all of it, so here are the three shapes that actually work.

Shape one: the triangle day (via Varenna)

Early train to Varenna, ferry-hop the Bellagio-Varenna-Menaggio triangle with lunch on whichever waterfront wins you, late train home. The classic, and rightly: maximum famous-village per hour. Its cost is the Como end - you’ll never see it.

Shape two: the cruise day (via Como)

Cadorna train to Como Nord Lago, the shared villa cruise (from $57) past Villa Erba and the film shoreline, funicular to Brunate for the balcony view, silk-shop afternoon, train home. More water, fewer villages, zero ferry logistics.

Shape three: the handled day

The guided from-Milan package (4.6/5 across 210 bookings, from $74) threads trains, Bellagio, Menaggio and the boat into one timetable - the answer for anyone who read shapes one and two and felt tired. It gives up flexibility and gets back certainty, which on a one-shot day is often the better currency.

The two rules either way

Go early - the 8-something train, not the 10-something: the lake’s light and the ferry queues both reward it. And check the season: March-October is full service; the shoulder weeks run thinner boats and shorter days, and the rental docks hibernate first.
