One Day, One Lake, No Regrets

An hour of rail buys one of the world’s great lakes - the trade of the whole Milan trip. What one day cannot buy is all of it, so here are the three shapes that actually work.

Shape one: the triangle day (via Varenna)

Early train to Varenna, ferry-hop the Bellagio-Varenna-Menaggio triangle with lunch on whichever waterfront wins you, late train home. The classic, and rightly: maximum famous-village per hour. Its cost is the Como end - you’ll never see it.

Shape two: the cruise day (via Como)

Cadorna train to Como Nord Lago, the shared villa cruise (from $57) past Villa Erba and the film shoreline, funicular to Brunate for the balcony view, silk-shop afternoon, train home. More water, fewer villages, zero ferry logistics.

Shape three: the handled day
