Milan to Como: Pick the Right Door

“Milan to Lake Como” is really two different journeys to two different lakes wearing one name, and choosing wrong costs day-trippers more hours than any other Como mistake.

Door one: Centrale to Varenna (the mid-lake)

The Tirano-line regional from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino: about an hour, direct, roughly hourly, single- digit euros booked as a regionale. It lands you a short walk from Varenna’s ferry pier - the hinge of the Bellagio-Varenna-Menaggio triangle

• which makes this the right door for the famous-villages day. Summer trains fill: go early, and buy the return leg’s slot when you buy the morning’s.

Door two: Cadorna to Como Nord Lago (the city end)

The Trenord line from Milano Cadorna to Como Nord Lago: about an hour, stepping off two minutes from the Como boat docks - the door for the shared villa cruises, the funicular to Brunate, and the city’s silk-and-arcades afternoon. (Trains from Centrale to Como San Giovanni also work; the walk down to the water is just longer.)

The honest chooser

Villages and postcard ferries: Varenna door. Cruises, the Ocean’s-Twelve shoreline and an urban lunch: Como door.
